Legal and Court Interpreter Training Program

This advanced course is recognized by the Ministry of Attorney General – Court Services Branch as a recognized training program for court interpreters in Canada. Taught by expert instructors, with extensive experience in Canada’s legal and judicial systems and a background as educators and interpreters, you’ll gain the skills necessary to work in a variety of settings, including the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB), other administrative tribunals, all levels of law enforcement, and federal and provincial courts (family, youth, and criminal).

Throughout the program, you will:

Develop a comprehensive understanding of the different agencies and professionals you’ll collaborate with
Learn the specific procedures and protocols for interpreting in each setting
Build a strong foundation that prepares you for diverse court and tribunal environments

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Certificate of Successful Completion recognized by the Ministry of Attorney General and accepted by agencies across Canada.

This course acts as preparation for the following exams/assessments:

CTTIC - Certified Court Interpreter with CTTIC
CILISAT - Language and Interpreting Skills Assessment Exam

Please note that this course is only offered once per calendar year and is structured as an intensive program requiring dedicated time and focus.

16 hours instructor-led classroom instruction (delivered in real-time via Zoom)
55 hours self-directed course materials
9 hours of assignments

Prerequisite:

Interpreting in Community Settings or comparable course
Experience working as an interpreter (in any setting)
Fluency in English and one other language

Eligibility Requirements:

English proficiency: You must demonstrate reading, writing, and speaking skills at Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 8 (or equivalent fluent‐intermediate level) and be familiar with Canadian systems.

This course is best suited for those who have lived in Canada for at least two years and have some prior experience as an interpreter in any setting.

Second-language proficiency: The course is delivered in English, but you will practice interpreting into your other working language. While we won’t formally test your language skills, you should have intermediate to advanced proficiency in reading, writing, listening, and speaking any language in which you intend to work as an interpreter.

All instructors and mentors are bilingual or multilingual, covering more than 10 languages, and our extended network of coaches supports over 30 languages. This ensures you receive guidance and feedback tailored to your linguistic needs.
